Environment Ecological sustainability is one of the three principles that underpin all Futur activity (the other two being fair trade and labour insertion). Futur’s commitment to environmental awareness was present at the organization’s very inception. Our handcrafted goods have always been made with completely natural fabrics, such as wool, linen and cotton for clothing, or clay, wood, or recycled cardboard for other crafts. When we set up our catering business in 2001, sustainability was at the heart of our operation. Although it’s certainly possible to demonstrate respect for the environment without any kind of accreditation, formal certifications help to establish specific criteria upon which efficiency surveys may be based, and to and measure and evaluate the fulfilment of specific objectives. And so in 2003 we applied for the ISO 14001 and EMAS environmental management standard certifications (achieved in 2004 and 2006, respectively). But well beyond our certification is the commitment to a philosophy of environmental conservation shared not only by all members of the Futur staff and organization, but also by our customers and suppliers. We have always believed in employing the least environmentally invasive methods, and are aware of the amount of organic and packaging-related waste generated by production. Thus we see the importance of every link in the Futur production-distribution chain adhering to a sound environmental policy. Futur integrates a variety of ecologically forward processes to reduce waste and minimize the impact of production on the environment. Among these is the systematic recycling of all waste, the use of certified and recycled paper products, the utilization of type A machinery (which is free of contaminant gases), the use of materials that are compostable and biodegradable, the market introduction of ecologically sensible food products and an overall reduction of energy consumption.
